Every summer, parents across Calgary ask themselves the same question: is my child actually ready for preschool? It usually arrives alongside a September start date, a daycare waitlist, or a return to work, and it rarely comes with a clear answer. The good news is that readiness is far less mysterious than it feels, and it has almost nothing to do with letters, numbers or how well your child sits still.
There is no magic age, but there are windows
Early learning programs in Alberta group children by developmental stage rather than by birthday. Toddler and child care programs generally begin around 18 to 19 months, once a child is walking confidently and can manage short separations. Preschool-aged programs typically start between two and a half and three years, when children begin choosing their own activities and returning to them with real purpose. Kindergarten-aged children continue in the same environment right up until Grade 1.
At Conifers Montessori Academy, our Junior Program serves children from 19 months to 3 years, and our Casa Program serves ages 2.5 to 6, including the kindergarten year. Where a child fits depends on the child, not the calendar.
Six signs your child is ready
- They show interest in other children by watching, imitating, or playing alongside them, even if they are not yet playing together.
- They can separate from you for short stretches, whether that is at a grandparent's house, a playgroup, or another room.
- They want to do things themselves: carrying their own cup, pulling on their own boots, insisting on 'me do it' even when it takes four times as long.
- They can follow a simple one- or two-step direction, like putting a toy back on the shelf.
- They can communicate a need, with words, signs or gestures. Full sentences are not required.
- They have some stamina for a routine. A predictable rhythm of snack, activity, outdoor time and rest does not overwhelm them.
If you read that list and thought 'some, not all', that is completely normal. Readiness is a spectrum, and a good program meets your child partway.
What readiness is not
A surprising amount of parental worry comes from expectations that no quality early learning program actually holds:
- Knowing the alphabet, counting to twenty, or writing their name. These are outcomes of preschool, not entry requirements.
- Being fully potty trained. Requirements vary by program. Our Junior Program welcomes children who are not yet trained, and we support the milestone alongside families when the timing is right.
- Never crying at drop-off. Tears are a sign of attachment, not unreadiness. Most children settle within minutes once the routine becomes familiar.
- Being naturally outgoing. Quiet, observant children often thrive in a calm, prepared environment precisely because nobody rushes them.
Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed.
Full days, part days, and what actually suits a toddler
Licensed child care in Alberta is billed by monthly hours rather than by a rigid schedule, which gives families genuine flexibility. Part-time attendance can be a gentle on-ramp for a younger toddler starting daycare for the first time, while full-time care suits working families and older preschoolers who benefit from the full uninterrupted work cycle each morning. Neither choice is 'better'. What matters most is consistency. A child who attends the same days each week settles faster than one whose schedule shifts around.
If your child is not quite there yet
Readiness is something you can build, and a few weeks of small changes at home make a real difference:
- Hand over real jobs. Let your child pour their own water, carry their plate to the sink, or wipe up a spill. Practical work builds the independence preschool runs on.
- Introduce a predictable daily rhythm, so the shape of a school day already feels familiar.
- Practise short goodbyes with someone your child trusts, and always return when you said you would.
- Read books about starting school and talk about it warmly and matter-of-factly, without over-preparing.
- Visit the classroom together before the first day so the room is a known place, not a new one.

Spaces in licensed preschool and daycare programs are limited because class sizes are kept small, and most quality programs, including ours, ask families to complete a tour before enrolling so you can see the classroom, meet the educators and confirm the fit. Ask about licensing, educator qualifications, and whether the program accepts the Alberta Child Care Subsidy and affordability grant, which can substantially lower your monthly fees.
