The first week of daycare is a season of big feelings — for your toddler and for you. A gentle, predictable start helps your child feel secure and builds the trust that makes drop-offs easier. Here's what we share with families joining our Junior Program.
Before the first day
- Visit together first. A tour or short visit lets your child meet their educators and see the classroom while you're still there.
- Talk about it simply and positively, naming what will happen: 'You'll play, have snack, and I'll come back after nap.'
- Practise small separations at home so goodbyes start to feel familiar.
Making drop-offs smoother
Keep goodbyes short, warm and consistent. A long, anxious farewell can make separation harder; a confident hug and a clear 'See you after nap' tells your child you trust this place. A familiar comfort item can help bridge home and school.
The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, 'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'
What helps toddlers settle
- Predictable routines — toddlers feel safe when they know what comes next.
- Practical-life activities like pouring, folding and tidying, which build independence and pride.
- Patient educators who let your child warm up at their own pace.
Every child settles on their own timeline, and a few teary mornings are completely normal. Our certified educators in Saddle Ridge, NE Calgary partner closely with families during this transition. If you're considering toddler care close to home, we'd love to welcome you for a visit.
